The 27 club is a mysterious cultural phenomenon that many artists, musicians, and actors have joined by dying at age 27. Come with us on the Death by Music Podcast rollercoaster as we explore the musicians’ stories, with a smattering of poop talk, personal anecdotes, and profanity to lighten the mood. The list so far: Robert Johnson, Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Mia Zapata (The Gits), Jimi Hendrix, Pete Ham (Badfinger), Amy Winehouse, Brian Jones (the Rolling Stones) Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison (The Doors).
Season 4 covers a bunch of artists from all over the spectrum, and a lot of two parters. In Season 4, we’ve covered Aretha Franklin, the Norwegian Death Metal Murders, Leslie Gore, Roky Erikson, John Lennon, Phil Spector, Jim Morrison, Avicii, and Mozart. Jake has deemed the Mozart episode his favorite episode ever. The Kurt Cobain episode is a release from our Patreon 27 Club series. Also make sure to check out the 27 Club extras episode for information about other artists in the club that didn’t get full episodes. Cassie just had a bebe, so we paused for a while after this one. Find a host of minisodes recorded by Jake and Alex in the meantime on our Spotify.
What a mix. Everybody welcome Jake to the team! In Season 3 we cover Wendy O. Williams (Plasmatics), Lynyrd Skynrd, Whitney Houston, Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report), Aaliyah, Jerry Garcia, Peter Steele (Type O Negative / Carnivore), Selena, Sam Cooke, and Layne Stanley (Alice in Chains). Find out the only kind of violence that Alex condones, how Jake feels about the beach, and what kind of Dairy Queen blizzard Cassie would do various things to get. Jake describes in vivid detail what fart spray smells like. The team attends a WrestleMania show.
Season 2 is a doozy, covering some of the largest names in the world. We cover Prince, Cass Elliott (The Mamas and the Papas), Cliff Burton (Metallica), Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Bobby Fuller (the Bobby Fuller Four), David Bowie, Mindy McCready, Pearl Jam at Roskilde 2000, and Freddie Mercury (Queen). Cass tells you what to expect when Alex replies to an email. In case you were wondering, Cassie and Alex tell the weird things their sisters did as kids to annoy them and how they really feel about Bret Michaels. The team touches on how anxiety inducing packed crowds at music concerts can be.
Death by Music Podcast’s debut Season! In Season 1, we covered Buddy Holly, the Great White Station Nightclub Fire, Marvin Gaye, John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Patsy Cline, Karen Carpenter, Dimebag Darrell (Pantera and Damageplan), The Beach Boys, Billie Holiday, and Elvis Presley. Cassie declares she’s a member of the Von Trapp Family, which makes Alex want to cringe and barf at the same time. Find out what liquor Cassie would take ten shots of, plus the time that Alex did the Lemmy challenge for her birthday. Cassie tells Alex she makes a good Bret Michaels face. The team mulls over starting a second podcast exclusively for shit talking your sister.
We have almost 100 minisodes! Have you ever wanted to listen to over 24 consecutive hours of Alex, Jake, and Cassie talking about shit like Ozzy peeing on the Alamo, Garth Brooks’ rock alter ego, and more? Check out the playlist below.
Alex has deemed this one of her favorite minisodes of the show. It’s worth a listen. The Beatles Rooftop concert on 30 January 1969 was their last public performance ever. This concert was unannounced and a fascinating effort between members of the band and others.
The episode list on here speaks for itself. Some of our favorite episodes: The Beatles Scandalous Stories; Snoop Dogg & Martha Stewart’s Friendship; and Stories of Musicians’ Bodyguards.
Here’s the part where we had to add more content to help more people reach our podcast! So here’s some fun facts about the Death by Music Podcast team. One time, Alex almost shit on her skydiving instructor. If you are the first person to find the episode and email the team which episode it is that she tells the story, please email us about it, and if you are correct, Tori will personally mail you $5.
“I’m sure all our Scandinavian listeners are all like, “Oh, not this shit again.” – Jake
